2018 ADVOCACY DAY
One of NYAPT's key legislative priorities is passage of legislation that allows school buses to be equipped with Stop Arm Cameras that can be used to ticket motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses.
This year, we had a good thing happen when the Governor included provisions in his budget proposal to accomplish this. Due to a number of factors, the Legislature did not include those provisions in the final budget. We are now working on building on the information and discussions we had in the budget season to get the stand-alone bill passed during the remaining 3 months of the session.
We will hold a Lobby and Advocacy Day on May 8th at the Legislative Office Building on State Street in Albany. The day will begin at 8:00 AM with continental breakfast for our attendees and exhibitors. We are working on bus transportation to and from the event for your convenience. We are also holding a "boot camp" on Monday evening beginning at 6:30 PM at the Marriott to orient all our advocates on what to expect the next day!
We will have opportunities to share our views on the stop arm camera issue along with several other key issues with State Legislators and with the invited media. We will also be advocating that day for: (1) drug and alcohol testing enhancement legislation; (2) criminal trespass and assault legislation; (3) expanding the disqualifying crimes in 509-cc; and (4) enhancements to section 1174 of the V&T law.
We will also set up limited numbers of legislative meetings for our members and will have supporting materials and memos for your use in those meetings.
We also have rooms available at the Albany Marriott for $115.00 per night for May 7th if you would like to stay overnight. Here is the information for those rooms:
