Operation Safe Stop

OPERATION SAFE STOP 2021!

Suffolk County Chapter of NYAPT hosted Operation Safe Stop on April 22, 2021, in Ronkonkoma, Long Island.  NYAPT partnered with Suffolk County to announce the start of the County-wide stop arm camera program to begin on May 1, 2021.

Operation Safe Stop is aimed at educating the motoring public that passing a stopped school bus is dangerous and illegal.  It is a combined effort of law enforcement agencies, school personnel, school bus contractors, traffic safety organizations, including local traffic safety boards, and the media to drive home this message.  See NYAPT's Press Release regarding scheduled Operation Safe Stop Activities!

SAFE STOP HOT SPOT SHEETS

The NYAPT Operation Safe Stop Committee has prepared and we have posted on the NYAPT Website a “HOT SPOT” form that members can use to advise local police about locations that have a higher incidence of illegal passing.

We encourage all our members to use the form to track these ‘high passing zones’ and to share them with your police departments in advance of April 22nd, which is Safe Stop Day.  Our police partners are ready and willing to help and to participate in Safe Stop Day - all we need to do is ask them!

Stop for the Bus!

It is estimated that over 50,000 private vehicles pass stopped school buses with red lights flashing on a typical school day.  With schools currently moving from in-person to virtual learning and back again, school buses are on the road some days and not on other days, which could lead to confusion for other drivers.  Stay alert - when you see a stopped school bus with red lights flashing, STOP FOR THE BUS! A child’s life depends on it!
